‘The Waverley’ passing the Horns Bridge Hotel, Chesterfield. ‘Jubilee’ 45561 ‘Saskatchewan’ is also crossing the ex. Great Central Railway, Chesterfield Loop.

Chesterfield Loop ran along the route of what is now the Hasland bypass as far Temple Normanton. The embankment can be see to the south side of the dual carriageway near the Temple Normanton westbound sliproad, and in the other direction from our picture, the Chesterfield bypass as far as the Tesco roundabout. The loop served Chesterfield by leaving the main line at Heath (section closed in 1963) and Staveley Town (section closed in 1967) stations. The tunnel under the town at Hollis Lane and Spa Lane, in our picture situated between the twin signal posts, still exists. The large Horns Bridge roundabout now occupies the area to the left of the scene.

The bridge beyond the footbridge carried the former Midland Railway Brampton Branch. This allowed access to Bryan Donkins and the Chesterfield Tube Company on Derby Road. The Branch continued over Park Road by a level crossing as two single branch lines. Passing between the Queen’s Park and the river alongside what it now Markham Road dual carriageway, the lines crossed Boythorpe Road by two separate level crossings. One turned into the gas works, crossing Chatsworth Road and entering near what is now the Lidl Supermarket, while the other line continued along Goyt Side to Walton, serving Robinsons and originally, Brampton Colliery – now the Ashdown Drive estate.
