The Revolution House. By David Charlesworth

£2.00 inc. envelope.

The card is A5 size with “Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year” message inside.

The Revolution House is in the Derbyshire village of Old Whittington, three miles north of Chesterfield just off the B6052 on what used to be the High Street. It takes its name from the Revolution of 1688 which is seen as a watershed in the development of the constitution and the role of Parliament.

Three hundred years ago the cottage was an alehouse called the ‘Cock and Pynot’ (Pynot being a dialect word for Magpie), though at that time it was a longer building. What remains today is a section, but it was here, as history and tradition relate, that three local noblemen, the Earl of Devonshire (from nearby Chatsworth), the Earl of Danby and Mr John D’Arcy, met to begin planning their part in events which led to the overthrow of King James II in favour of Willam and Mary of Orange.

The present ‘Cock and Magpie’ can be seen behind the Revolution House.
