Chesterfield Parish Church by night (falling snow). By David Charlesworth
£2.00 inc. envelope.
The card is A5 size with a “Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a HappyNew Year” message inside.
No one knows quite how long there has been a church in Chesterfield but a church is listed in the Lincoln Chartulary in 1093-4 as having existed around 1042 – 1066. What is certain is that Chesterfield had a mother church in 1234 and that much of the work on the building we know today was completed around 1370.
The spire was added around 1362 – 1400. The lean and twist is a result of unseasoned wood and the uneven expansion asd contraction of the lead. It is currently 2.9 metres (9ft 6in) from true centre with a 45 degree twist.
